If it’s just ticks that we’re talking about, then we’re talking about a dozen different types of ticks. While not all of these species are known to spread diseases by carrying bacteria and viruses, some still do. And it is best for us to always protect our pets and even ourselves from any tick bites.
Dangerous Diseases Spread By Ticks
While most people may commonly encounter ticks because of household pets, doesn’t mean that it’s the only tick that they can come across with. Some ticks such as the black-legged tick are known to carry most of the tick-borne diseases in some parts of the world. Here are some of the diseases that it carries:
Lyme Disease
This infection is caused by Borrelia Burgdorferi which is a very lethal type of infection caused by bacteria that can cause sickness to both humans and animals. In some parts of the United States, it is the most common reported tick-borne disease that has been around the area and has been increasing over the years starting from 2013. While in the midst of all these, there is another bacteria called Borrelia mayonili which was discovered to be a very similar illness to Lyme disease.
Anaplasmosis
This disease is commonly known as human granulocytic ehrlichiosis which was mostly recognized in the year 1990s. It is also brought about by blacklegged ticks or deer ticks which are known to also carry Lyme disease. Although this type of disease is less dealt with compared to Lyme infections.
Babesiosis
This is an infection caused by protozoa. While there have been no connections between the two, in most cases it appears to be that if a person has Lyme disease, chances are they also have Babesiosis. It is still unclear though whether this can only be a symptom or a sign of the presence of Lyme disease but the two very well seem to be around each other most of the time.
Ehrlichiosis
Ehrlichiosis is caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis which is found in the south-eastern and south-central United States. While this disease isn’t usually found in these areas, there are still cases that are being reported to have projected signs of this infection.
Powassan Virus Disease
This is a tickborne flavivirus disease that has been first recognized in the areas of Upper Midwest Minnesota and Northeaster states back in the year 2008. Although, one good thing is that the number of cases for this disease has been significantly low ever since its discovery.
Borrelia Miyatomol Disease
This disease has only been identified by the World Health Organization in the year 2011 and is known to cause sicknesses in humans such as relapsing fever that is transmitted by ticks. While it is not much related to the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease, there are still alarming reports about the disease.
